This report by New America analyzed professional teaching standards in all 50 states to better understand whether states’ expectations for teachers incorporate culturally responsive teaching. The review focused on the extent to which state standards explicitly address the eight CRT competencies of interest and how each state differentiates the standards.
Nebraska has set new requirements for teaching American civics in schools, allowing schools to choose from administering the naturalization test used by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services once in the 8th grade and 12th grade, requiring students to attend or participate in a government meeting and complete a project about what they learned, or require students to complete a project or paper and class presentation about the national holidays. Gov. Pete Ricketts signed the measure into law on March 27 after it won approval from state lawmakers.
In April, the College Board’s PSAT 8/9 test will replace the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress in math and English Language Arts, known as M-STEP, designed to measure how well students are mastering state standards. PSAT is the practice version of the SAT, which students take in the 11th grade during the college admissions process.

Gov. Gina Raimondo announced on March 18, Angélica Infante-Green has been nominated as Rhode Island's next commissioner of education, replacing Commissioner Ken Wagner, who is leaving the job to become a senior fellow for education policy and practice at the Annenberg Institute at Brown University. If the confirmation process goes as planned, Infante-Green should begin her new position on April 29.
