The CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy are intended to build on the rigor of the state’s previous English language arts standards, incorporating current research and input from other educational sources—including state departments of education, scholars, professional organizations, teachers and other educators, parents, and students. California additions to the standards (identified in bold typeface and “CA,” the state abbreviation) were incorporated in an effort to retain the consistency and precision of the state’s past standards. The standards are intended to be rigorous, based on research and evidence, and internationally benchmarked. They also intend to address the demands of today to prepare students to succeed tomorrow.
