This document presents a learning progression of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English language arts and literacy. Included is a working definition of learning progressions and a description of the conceptual framework that has guided the work on this project, which attempts to describe research-based pathways for learning that can guide lesson planning and curriculum and assessment development in grades K–12. This document was developed in 2010-2011 by national content experts, researchers, and master teachers from across the U.S. using empirical research and the CCSS in English language arts and literacy.
This resource can be extremely helpful for educators as they organize their curricula, daily lessons, and formative assessments in English language arts (ELA). It articulates ELA learning progressions that were developed through an extensive review of the research and are aligned with the Common Core State Standards. It is organized around enduring understandings, grade-span learning targets (elementary, middle, and high), and progress indicators (for two consecutive grades). Each progress indicator can be broken down further to create mini-progressions that inform daily lessons.
