This web seminar, produced by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), features presenters Joan Herman, Co-Director Emeritus of the National Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) at UCLA, and Nancy Butler Songer, Professor of Science Education and Learning Technologies at the University of Michigan. They provide an overview of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), summarize the National Research Council’s report on NGSS assessment, and discuss the challenges for classroom implementation, as well as tasks that can assess proficiency on the NGSS performance expectations.
Educators and policymakers seeking a summary of the NGSS and NRC’s report on NGSS assessment will find this web seminar effective to that end. The presenters cover a broad number of topics and emphasize the main messages of the NGSS and the key findings of the NRC report. Background on the development of key documents is provided, and the information is delivered at a comfortable pace. It should be noted that the web seminar took place in January of 2014, and therefore does not address findings or tools released since that time.
