High School English Language Arts Grade Level Considerations

In contrast to the kindergarten through grade 8 Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, high school level standards are not grade-specific. Instead, the standards specify learning expectations upon graduation from high school. This presentation describes key considerations for item and task development that are specific to high school. These include guidelines for the following considerations:

  • reading level
  • vocabulary
  • grade appropriate contexts
  • item difficulty
  • assessment targets and associated expectations
