Jo Boaler, a professor of mathematics education at Stanford University, writes in the Hechinger Report an article that debunks myths about who is good in math (hint: not those who can memorize well and calculate fast). Moreover, Boaler argues for the Common Core state standards and says that the Common Core math standards encourage the practices and skills (e.g., mapping out pathways, reasoning about complex solutions, and communicating in different forms) that are found in high-achieving math students.
